Fries was born in Beromunster, Switzerland and studied sculpture in Lucerne in 1980, and painting under Gerhard Richter at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1986. Fries works are aintings but the aint is so sculpted that is almost sculpture. She is very interested in the work of Maria Sibylla Merian who with her daughter studied the insects and flora of Suriname.
